A Ukiah man has been arrested for alleged possession of methamphetamine and a flare gun. Officers stopped a vehicle early last week for expired registration and other violations. Ukiah Police officers arrested a suspected carjacker earlier in the week who took the car from an elderly woman and threatened her with an aluminum baseball bat. UPD said that Erik Smith was taken into custody on carjacking and elder abuse as well as a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear.
A beach hazard statement remains in effect from Thanksgiving morning through the evening. Large, unexpected “sneaker” waves can sweep people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. Waves can also move large objects crushing anyone caught underneath.
The annual Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden’s Festival of Lights returns to Fort Bragg this weekend. The event runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through December 18th, tickets are $10 for adults, and kids under 16 get in free. Tickets are available through gardenbythesea.org.

A Humboldt County trucking company is being made to pay just under $72,000 for accidents that killed a driver and spilled milk into Lake County waterways over the last couple of years. Steve Wills Trucking in Fortuna, has reached a settlement for claims it violated the Clean Water Act with spills in 2020 and 2021.
Unemployment increased slightly in October in Lake County as well as across the state. The LakeCountyNews reports October’s unemployment rate was 4.5%, up from 4.3% in September. The October 2021 rate was 6.2%. Lake County’s 4.3% jobless rate ranked it No. 42 statewide in October, and Mendocino County was 20th with 3.3%.
