A mural in downtown Upper Lake was dedicated yesterday. The mural is the portrait of Vanessa Niko, who was a member of the Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake and was of Samoan descent. She died in 2017 following a domestic violence assault. The mural is to honor Niko’s memory, and to bring attention to the national epidemic of violence against indigenous women.
