The body of a hiker was discovered near the Lake Mendocino Spillway this past Sunday. A coroner’s investigation identified the hiker as 29-year-old Rocio Lupian-Lopez of Ukiah. Family members had been searching for Lopez when she didn’t return home from a walk. Medical complications were thought to be her cause of death.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reports that a former Lake County correctional deputy has been arrested on charges of sexual misconduct with a female inmate at the jail. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has a new chaplain. Davina Sentak retired from CalFire in 2017 and has worked with the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority and the Sheriff’s office. Sentak is a longtime county resident and currently lives in Willits.
A fire that burned along Highway 101 in Ukiah late Tuesday afternoon has now been dubbed the Masonite Fire. Wednesday, Governor Newsom extended the drought emergency for 39 counties, including Lake County, due to continued dry conditions, the past three years have been the driest years on record for the area. The governor also terminated the drought declaration for 19 counties, including Mendocino County.
