Caltrans is launching a state-funded “quick-build” pilot project this summer to improve pedestrian safety and calm traffic along a 30-mile stretch of Highway 20. The project will install flexible plastic posts in center turn lanes to prevent illegal passing, add three new crosswalks with flashing beacons in Nice, and two in Lucerne, plus make striping and signage changes. Construction should start in summer 2026.
