The fate of the 133-year-old Palace Hotel building was decided this past Thursday by the City of Ukiah. A conditional permit for demolition was issued after apparently that permit application was kept secret for 10 days. The decision has resulted in local and state advocates crying “foul” on the secrecy of the application and the fact that the city refuses to allow the building to be restored. No one connected to the demolition project has come forward to comment and it is unknown in whose hands ownership the building actually rests. Demolition could happen within weeks, although more submittals are required and the exact date rests with Chief Building Officer Matt Keizer.
