Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall will ask the County Board of Supervisors when they meet tomorrow, for a hiring bonus of $20,000 for sheriff’s deputies as well as a $7,000 incentive for officers who finance their own training at the police academy. In a letter to the board, Kendall says personnel numbers in the department are at a historical low and the bonuses would go a long way towards helping recruit highly qualified candidates. If agreed to, the signing bonus would be four times that offered to potential candidates in the San Francisco area.
