A local cannabis business has announced its closing. Less than a month since the last meeting of the Lake Cannabis Alliance, Alliance member Pro Farms made the announcement, stating that due to current market conditions and the level at which cannabis companies are currently taxed, the company must close their 60,000 square foot facility. The decision is a telling sign of the climate for cannabis growers in the region and the industry. Cannabis in 2021 contributed some $16 million dollars to the state’s general fund but is taxed five times on its way to the consumer, a burden that many in the Lake County Cannabis Alliance says excessive and bears reform.
