Clear Lake Experiencing Fish Die-Off

A multi-species fish die-off, that may have started at the beginning of the month is affecting Clear Lake, including shad, hitch, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and bass. A dead 7-foot white sturgeon was also found. Wildlife officials blame low dissolved oxygen from recent heat, lack of wind, no seasonal water turnover, and reduced photosynthesis, with decomposing fish further depleting oxygen. Tribal measurements show oxygen levels below the protective standard. Residents should report observations to iNaturalist for the Clear Lake Fish Kill Monitoring Project.
