Bright Object Seen In Sky Was A Meteor

Thursday night, social media reported a bright meteor visible across Northern California around 8.   Video shared by a Ukiah resident of showed the glowing object breaking apart and leaving a trail, caused by the meteoroid burning up in the atmosphere. Especially bright meteors, commonly called fireballs and technically called bolides, can leave lingering vapor trails.  NASA and the American Meteor Society confirmed no major meteor showers were peaking, so it seems Lake, Mendocino and Napa county residents got a special astronomical treat.
