West Nile Virus Detected in Lake County

Three sentinel animals in Lake County have tested positive for West Nile virus; they are used an early detection for mosquito-borne diseases. The Vector Control district manager confirmed the virus is annual in California and Lake County, appearing late this year due to mild temperatures.   Use EPA-registered mosquito repellent at dusk/dawn, eliminate breeding grounds, and wear protective clothing to reduce infection risk. While no other West Nile cases are detected in Lake County in 2025, 27 California counties show virus activity, with nine human cases and one fatality.
