In an evaluation of the performance of three emergency shelters in the area, two in Ukiah and one in Fort Bragg, the Mendocino County Department of Social Services found that the facilities are operating effectively but are challenged by a lack of funding, staff turnover and the increasing number of people needing assistance. The report, delivered by a company called ICF, found that the most frequently stated need was for more beds. The good news is that of the number of unhoused people moving from shelters into permanent housing has increased over the last two years.
