City of Willits Announces $4.2 Million Budget Shortfall

The finance director for the city of Willits, in a public meeting last week, revealed that the city is facing an over $4.2 million budget shortfall.  Manny Orozco attributes the city’s financial woes to a lack of financial leadership since 2020, when the finance director position for the city was left vacant.  Audits have not been done since 2018.  Meanwhile, sales tax revenues have dropped an average of 9% annually since 2021. The city is also awaiting reimbursement of roughly $2 million from agencies including Rails to Trails, MCOG, Clean Californi,a and FEMA for infrastructure projects.  Mayor Tom Allman, in response to questions of misappropriation, said he has seen no evidence of that.
