A vegetation fire south of Ukiah on Wednesday was thought to have been started by a mower. UVFA Battalion Chief Justin Buckingham was first on the scene in the 4900 block of Burke Hill Drive, and when he arrived, people were spraying the fire with water. Fire crews arrived shortly after and kept the fire from spreading. About a quarter acre was burned, but there were no injuries and no damage to structures in the area. Chief Buckingham said, given the danger of dry vegetation this time of year, mowing should be done in the morning and with a string trimmer rather than a bladed mower.
