Mendocino County Continues to Struggle With Budget

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved a series of cuts to reduce the projected budget shortfall next year from $17 million to $2.6 million. Six county department heads submitted proposed reductions of just under $625,000 and it was discussed that a million for road repairs may also come under the knife. Using funds from the consistently underbudget DA’s office, and taking funding for fire agencies from public safety funds rather than the general fund, were discussed. The board also agreed that cannabis tax revenue needs to be followed more closely. Staff also recommended offering up to $25,000 to employees to voluntarily resign. Qualified employees would be eligible for anywhere from $5000 to $25,000 severance, depending on how long they’ve worked for the county. Revenue-generating opportunities were also discussed. The next budget workshop is May 6th.
