A Ukiah man was hospitalized on Sunday after shooting himself accidentally. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to the 3400 block of Ruddick Cunningham Road in Ukiah. Deputies found Lucio Romero-Ortiz wounded and began medical aid. Investigation found that Romero-Ortiz had been drinking and discharged a firearm several times around small children outside, then again after entering the residence, where a woman and another child were present. He discharged the weapon again and was struck in the leg. He was transported to an out-of-county hospital for treatment. Romero-Ortiz may face charges of negligent use of a firearm, child abuse, and Possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm.
