A traffic stop in Ukiah turned into a brief pursuit and ended up with two people being arrested earlier in the month. An officer attempted a stop of a vehicle driven by 51-year-old Anamaria M. Mejia of Ukiah, for talking on her cell phone while driving. She did not stop when signaled, then suddenly veered to the other side of the road near a vineyard and a male passenger jumped out of the vehicle. A foot chase began and 38-year-old Douglas T. Whipple III was apprehended with the help of a drone. Whipple was arrested and charged with parole violation for a firearm-related offense as well as two felony warrants. He was considered armed and dangerous. A warrant was issued for Mejia and a large amount of marijuana and other drugs were found in her residence. She was booked on charges of harboring a fugitive, failure to obey an officer and giving false information. Additional drug charges are pending.
