At its meeting on the 22nd, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve a plan to correct issues with financial oversight and ensure accurate accounting of the county’s finances. Late filings have been an issue of late and an audit of the county was called for last year. The audit found that a risk assessment of the consolidation of the auditor-controller and treasurer-tax collectors offices wasn’t done before proceeding, which then caused issues with the county’s payroll system and conflicts due to a lack of proper segregation of duties. The plan to remedy those issues given by the state suggests that the two departments be separated. Auditing the county has cost the taxpayers somewhere in the neighborhood of $800K.
