Man Who Started Hopkins Fire Sentenced to 15 Years and Millions in Restitution

The man found guilty of setting the Hopkins Fire was sentenced on Monday. Devin L. Johnson was given 15 years in prison in Marin County Superior Court after a mistrial was declared in his first trial, and his second trial was moved from Mendocino County to Marin County. He was credited with the 1099 days he’s already served while awaiting trial, but will not be allowed to earn credits toward early release. Besides the 15-year sentence, Johnson will be ordered to pay restitution, with 13 families already filing claims, and more expected to submit claims for restitution to the district attorney’s office. Current claims total just over $4 million. Claims for restitution on behalf of responding fire departments, CalFire, PG&E, and Mendocino County for fire suppression costs have been referred to the Mendocino County Superior Court. Johnson also faces more court appearances on charges in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties.
