Man to Stand Trial in First Case of Murder By Fentanyl Overdose

After a preliminary hearing last week, Judge J. David Markham ordered Joe Nathan Boggs, Jr. to stand trial in the death last year of 17-year-old Illeanna Makena Frease. Boggs is charged with second-degree murder with implied malice after giving Frease the fentanyl she overdosed on. He is also charged with the sale of a controlled substance, transportation of a controlled substance for sale, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor. Boggs remains in custody on a $1 million bond. This case is the first involving charges of homicide related to a fentanyl overdose.
