The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors has voted to offer a hiring bonus in its search for an Ag Commissioner. The county has been without an ag commissioner since 2022, and it’s hoped that a $40,000 bonus to be paid over three years might entice suitable candidates. Without an ag commissioner, the county could lose funding from programs that can only be certified by a qualified Ag Commissioner. Also, any business that uses scales or other measuring devices is at a disadvantage, because the Ag Commissioner also serves as the sealer of weights and measures. The certifications and licenses an Ag Commissioner is required to hold are also thought to impede finding qualified candidates.
