Boat Made of Reeds Harvested from Lake County to Make Historic Voyage

Lake County will be a part of what hopes to be an historic voyage to Hawaii. A 60’ vessel will be constructed of tule reeds harvested from Lake County. Boats made of tule reeds are particularly buoyant, and the methodology comes from Coast Miwok, Ohlone, and Pomo tribes. The reeds have been harvested by Joe Weber, a tribal member of the Big Valley Rancheria of Pomo in collaboration with Jin Ishikawa, who is the driving force behind the expedition. The boat will sail to Hawaii in 2025, Weber will meet Ishikawa and his crew in Hawaii
