Mendocino County Residents Could See Supplemental Tax Bills

Mendocino County is looking for ways to cover the budget deficit, and one of those ways will be supplemental property tax bills to a large number of homeowners. Mendofever reports the county is behind in collecting property taxes and as much as 30% of properties in the county are currently unassessed or underassessed. County Supervisor Ted Williams is urging officials to cut that percentage in half within the next two years. Treasurer Tax Collector Auditor Chamisse Cubison says that figure may be high, as some taxes are not due yet and some are under payment agreements. Cubbison says a small assessor staff, new computer software that is taking longer than expected to bring online are a couple of the things holding up the county collecting what it is owed.
