Increase in Police and Fire Calls to Homeless Shelter Causing Concern

A decrease in staffing and services at the Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center has been connected to the increase in calls to both the Ukiah Police Department and the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority. TheWillitsNews reports there were 104 calls for police assistance between August of 2022 and February of 2023, compared to 85 in the previous six month period. The reduction in available funding, mostly due to the decrease in the pandemic, has made maintaining staff, training new staff and starting new programs difficult. Sage Wolf of Building Bridges also explained that there is the possibility of new funding coming in March, so she’s hopeful the trend in calls will reverse.
