An urchin diver has spotted another sunflower sea star about three miles north of Noyo Harbor. The sea star was seen in about 18 feet of water about 300 feet from the beach. The diver reported the animal to be about 7” across, with 14 arms, which means it could be a juvenile. Recovery of the sea stars could mean Mendocino’s kelp forests may be in the beginning stages of rebounding.
