A Ukiah man taken into custody early yesterday morning housed at the Mendocino County Jail was found dead in his cell several hours later. The 64 year old man was intoxicated and was arrested on a number of charges. He was evaluated by medical staff at the jail and then placed alone in the jail’s sobering cell, where he was checked on at least 4 times an hour. At the 6 am check, the man was found unresponsive. Medical staff performed CPR with the help of fire and ambulance staff, but was pronounced dead at 6:30 am. An investigation is underway.
