May 5th is National Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls Awareness Day, established to bring awareness that women in indigenous communities face higher rates of violence, rape, and murder than most other Americans. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s movement has been founded by women to shed light on this issue. Observances are scheduled in communities across the country. According to data from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, four of five native women have experienced violence in their lives, and murder the third leading cause of death in this group.
