Frauds Try to Flood EDD With Paper to Steal Millions in Benefits, EDD Stops Attempt

The Employment Development Department recently announced it has stopped an unemployment insurance fraud attempt involving the attempted theft of millions in benefits by flooding the agency with as many as 47,000 paper and fax applications. The agency normally receives about 7,000 applications. The Lake County News reports EDD is now mailing notices to claimants to separate the fraud attempts from legitimate claims. Any legitimate claimant who receives an EDD notice should respond with the requested verification right away and EDD will review and process the legitimate claim.
