A group calling itself the Mendocino Patriots staged a gathering outside the home of the Public Health Officer, Dr. Andrew Coren over the weekend. Dr. Coren, the Ukiah Police Department, and Mendocino County Sheriff’s office were all aware that the protest against masking mandates would take place. The protest began with about 15 people that then dropped to about 5, and at least one of the Drs. neighbors asked the group to go elsewhere but they refused. A posting on the group’s website said the board of supervisors should be voting on health mandates, not leaving the decision to one person. Dr. Coren said that while he supports the group’s right to protest, “he wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t try and protect people with these health orders.” Chief Executive Officer Carmel Angelo said it “egregious” that the group would choose to protest the county-imposed mandate outside an individual’s home.
