Millions of honeybees and their hives have disappeared from an apiary in Hopland. According to Sonoma-based Tauzer Apiaries, which owns the bees, thieves have stolen 384 colonies. More than 800 hives across the state have been stolen this year, and the Mendocino colonies were found in Yolo County thanks to an anonymous tip. The theft is under investigation. Historically, when large theft of hives are found, it tends to be competing apiaries that perpetuate the crime.
