Lakeport City Council Meets, Discusses Fireworks on the 4th of July

The Lakeport City Council at their recent meeting discussed fireworks in the city. Safe and Sane fireworks have been sold since 2009, the only place in Lake County where they are. TheLakeCountyNews reports non-profits make about $2 million from sales of fireworks. Police Chief Brad Rasmussen said illegal fireworks continue to be a problem, both locally and statewide. Opinions on both sides of the issue were expressed. It was suggested that private security be hired to help patrol the city during the holiday, and that raising the surcharge for fireworks could help pay for those patrols. The council directed staff to gather more information about proposed security and additional surcharge.
