Mendocino County Recognized for Having Some of The Worst Governmental Transparency

Mendocino County has been recoginized as one of the country’s “worst in government transparency” by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The recognition puts the county Board of Supervisors among the ranks of the FBI, NSA and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The ranking comes after county officials passed ordinance #4507, which introduced fees to access public records. TheMendoVoice reports the California Public Records Act authorizes government agencies to pass on the direct cost of record reproduction to requesters of public records, which includes the government’s copy or printing costs but nothing else. Ord. 4507, however, authorized the county to bill records requesters for staff time.
