Lake County Settles in Lawsuit Over Jail Suicide

Lake County has agreed to pay $2 million dollars in a settlement to the son of a jail inmate who committed suicide in her cell in 2015. The suit against the County and its private jail medical provider alleges constitutionally inadequate treatment of 56-year-old Elizabeth Dara Gaunt. The formal complaint states that she was seen by a nurse, but not by a doctor as her mental condition deteriorated. The settlement is believed to be the highest amount awarded in California involving an inmate suicide
