A burglary suspect who allegedly rammed a Lakeport Police Department squad car and led police on a high-speed chase, was shot three times. Police responded to a burglar alarm Friday morning just after 4 at Hillside Honda. The suspect fled the scene and reached speeds of more than 100 mph on Highway 29 and roughly 70 mph on Scotts Valley Road. After crashing into a fence, the suspect reportedly put his vehicle in reverse and rammed into an LPD officer’s vehicle. A sheriff’s deputy fired his weapon and struck Smith three times. Smith was reportedly shot in the arm, the chest and was grazed by a bullet in the head. Smith was to a trauma center by air ambulance, where he underwent surgery. His status is unknown. The LPD officer whose car was rammed reported some pain but he was expected to be OK. Personnel from LPD, LCSO and the DA’s Office were at the scene into the afternoon on Friday, where detectives were conducting a forensic investigation. It’s expected Smith will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony evading a peace officer and burglary. The DA’s office may charge him with more counts once the investigation progresses.
