Goveror Marks Anniversary of Oct 2017 Northern CA Wildfires

Governor Jerry Brown is thanking emergency responders and those helping to rebuild one year after a string of deadly wildfires.  The governor said yesteday that “we remember those we lost and the devastating impacts of the October Fire Siege.”  There were 21 major wildfires fueled by gusty winds and dry conditions October 8th and 9th of 2017, including in Lake and Mendocino Counties.

A candlelight vigil and plaque dedication ceremony was held at Lion’s Park in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County on Sunday night for the Redwood Complex Fire, which claimed the lives of 9 people and left and hundreds of structures destroyed, The Sulphur Fire in Lake County destroyed 162 structures – at least 158 homes were in the area around Clear Lake.

While rebuilding efforts continue, there’a lawsuit on behalf of victims of the Sulphur Fire, alleging that PG&E’s failure to update aging infrastructure and maintain trees near its power lines caused the destructive fires.
