Accident Requires Extrication in Hopland

A vehicle was reportedly torn in half in a crash yesterday in Hopland. Major injuries were repored in the one-vehicle acccident that happened at around 6:30 yesterday evening near Old River Road. The Ukiah Fire Department had to do an extricatiion to get a person out of the vehicle. The person was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hosptial by REACH air ambulance. CHP said the vehicle was about 10-feet down an embankment on the east side of the roadway and was removed by the fire department

Clear Lake State of the City Presentation and Town Hall Wedneday Night

The Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and the city of Clearlake will host the second annual “State of the City” presentation and town hall tomorrow night. The program will begin at 5 p.m. with an open house featuring the opportunity to interact with and ask questions of the various local departments including the Clearlake Police Department, Code Enforcement, City Clerk, and more. The formal presentation by the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and the city of Clearlake will begin at 6 p.m. Appetizers will be provided. The event will be held at at the Clearlake Community Center.

Brothers Arrested After Gunshots Fired

Two brothers were arrested after gunshots were fired in Ukiah on Sunday. Officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots fired in the 900 block of Waugh Lane. The brothers had been fighting, and one of them allegedly fired a gun into the ground four times. Roman Maciel was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, public intoxication and violating probation. Miguel Maciel was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and for an outstanding warrant.

Manslaughter Charge Dropped for Now in Case of Lake County Deputy Death

The man who got into an altercation with Lake County Deputies prior to Deputy Rob Rumfelt’s death, made his first court appearance late last week. The district attorney says he’s holding off on charging 21-year-old Alex Michael Castillo with manslaughter and other charges related to Rumfelt’s death pending autopsy results. Castillo is due to return to court tomorrow, and the charge of resisting an officer resulting in death will be dropped, while a count of child endangerment will be added. Police responded to a residence last Tuesday regarding, and struggled to take Castillo into custody for domestic violence.

Dismissal of Lawsuit Over Medical Cannabis Tax Appealed

The dismissal of a lawsuit against Mendocino County’s cannabis business tax has been appealed. The attorney for the plaintiffs says the special taxing of medical cannabis products is unconstitutional. The lawsuit, filed by cannabis business owners and advocates, states that Measure AI, which passed on the November ballot, is not a general tax, but rather but a special tax. In March, a Mendocino County judge dismissed the lawsuit.

Lake County Fires Contained

Two fires that broke out in Lake County yesterday are under control. Evacuations for a subdivision were issued at around noon for the Water Fire at Double Eagle Ranch east of of Clearlake Oaks. The fire’s forward progress was stopped just before 1PM and residents who were evacuated were allowed back to their homes. Also at around noon, a fire was reported in Clear Lake Riviera. That fire in the area of Larkspur Way and Emerald Drive was contained just before 12:30 p.m, and burned about a quarter-acre of grass.

Proposal Moves 4 NVUSD Schools into Athletic League

A CIF North Coast Section alignment committee has unanimously voted to approve the proposal of a seven-school league would be part of the Marin-Sonoma-Mendocino Conference. If apporved, Napa, Vintage, American Canyon, Justin-Siena, Sonoma Valley, Petaluma and Casa Grande-Petaluma, would be grouped into a league starting with the 2018-19 school year.

Communities Turn Out to Honor Fallen Deputy

Communities in Lake County turned out yesterday to pay their respects to Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Rob Rumfelt during a procession through the county into Lakeport, where the hearse carrying his body passed under an American flag held up by ladder trucks in downtown. Young and old showed up waving flags and signs to honor the 10-year veteran with the police department, former assistant coach, and veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Rumfelt died in the line of duty Tuesday night. He suffered a medical condition after being assaulted by a suspect, and crashed his vehicle into a tree.

2 Face Weapons Charges After Being Stopped for Speeding

An alert resident in Mendocino County helped authorites find an assault weapon and make an arrest. An MCSO deputy pursued a speeding vehicle on Highway 162, and lost sight of it for a short time. When he caught up to it, a bystander told him that an occupant had fled the vehicle. A CHP officer found 19-year-old Adrian Martinez-Rodriguez of Covelo, and an assault rifle nearby. Martinez-Rodriguez and the driver are both facing weapons charges.

Health Advisory Issued for Lake County Due to Air Quality

A Health advisory has been issued for Lake County by the Lake County Air Quality Management District. he smoke and haze currently visible throughout Lake County are primarily the result of transport smoke from numerous fires in Northern California and Southern Oregon. . The UNHEALTHY to HAZARDOUS air quality alert results from ultra fine particulates and other air pollutants contained in the smoke combined with the high temperatures and humidity. Health officials say individuals with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other lung or heart diseases should carefully adhere to their medical treatment plans and maintain at least a five-day supply of prescribed medications. They should limit outdoor activity and unnecessary physical exertion.
