Ukiah Water Rates May Go Up

Ukiah residents may soon see an increase in their water rates.

The Ukiah City Council is considering a plan to raise water rates by more than 17 percent over the next five years. The Ukiah Daily Journal is reporting, the first increase of nearly 5 percent is set for this July. At its meeting last week, the council voted unanimously for the City Manager to mail out the required Prop. 218 notices and schedule another public hearing before the council will vote on the five-year plan. The first year the rate would increase by 4.5 percent, then level off to 3 percent a year. The plan calls for a “shortage surcharge,” which means that if drought conditions continue or worsen and the city is required to cut water usage by more than 20 percent, residents may be charged an additional amount to make up for the lack in revenues.
