Fatal Crash Near Willits

One person was killed yesterday morning in a crash on southbound Highway 101 near Willits. The California Highway Patrol indicated that the driver was possibly asleep at the wheel while traveling in the wrong direction on the highway iand left the road, went down an embankment and into a tree. The CHP responded to the scene about 8:30 a.m. yesterday. Caltrans District 1 closed down the No. 2 lane of southbound Highway 101 about three miles south of Willits so crews could remove debris and clean up fluid spills from the site of the crash. The highway fully reopened just before 5 p.m. As of this morning, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office had still not released the identity of the vicitm, pending notification of next-of-kin.
