Possible scams to be aware of for fire victims

The California State License Board is warning victims of the Valley Fire to be wary of unscrupulous and unlicensed contractors that may prey on those trying to rebuild after the fire. Signs also are being posted warning that anyone found contracting without a license in an area for which a state or federal state of emergency has been declared can face felony charges. The board warns residents to avoid hiring the first contractor who comes along, avoid rushing into repairs – get at least three bids for comparison and check references and hire only licensed contractors and ask to see their license and a photo ID. Also, don’t pay with cash, get licensing proof, and with your contract, make sure you have an itemized list of work.
